Day 2 Focus: Identify one unrealistic expectation you’ve been
holding onto and LET IT GO.
The Blurb: A lot of our stress is caused by feeling pressure to meet expectations. It’s important to look at what’s stressing you and why you’re feeling that it might be unrealistic. Maybe you’re putting too much pressure on yourself to do something or behave a certain way. Maybe you set your goals too high and then you feel that stab of disappointment when you don’t hit the mark. We’ve all been there. It’s disappointing and frustrating – it can lead to unhealthy self-doubt.
Sometimes you just need to take a moment to reassess. Why do you feel that you have to meet this goal? What’s the worst thing that can happen if you don’t? Is there another way to break it down into something more manageable? Are there people that can help you? Are you trying to meet someone else’s demands? Can you adjust the timeframe so that you can accomplish your goal? Sometimes just taking the pressure of HAVING to do something makes it much more managable.
Suggestions: Anyone have any New Year’s Resolutions they would like to adjust? Maybe you’re trying to please too many people and not being honest with the amount of time you have available to commit to something. Saying NO to things doesn’t make you weak – it gives you the ability to deliver on what you say you will.
Take a moment to think of something that’s hanging over your head, something that’s stressing you out unnecessarily. See if there’s a way to adjust it into something you can manage. Allow yourself to let go of that stress and move forward.
Keeping it Real: So to be honest, the first thing I thought of was – I can’t possibly blog every day for 30 days straight. Hah! But, this is something I’ve committed to do that will hopefully benefit others, so it’s worth the time investment. I’m choosing to let go of the expectation that I can juggle a zillion things at once. Recently I’ve decided that I can only try to kick butt at a limited amount of things and so I need to choose which ones are the most important to me. That’s why I chose the Rumi quote at the beginning- “Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.”
Photo of the Day: My imagery for this picture was to think of my unrealistic expectation and let it go… up, up, and away from me.
What’s something you’ve been holding onto that you want to find the freedom to release? How have you been able to manage expectations of those around you? Once you’ve let something go that’s been pressuring you, how did it alter your attitude or the way you feel about yourself?
If you want to try it with me, here’s each day’s focus. 30 Days to spend a little time bettering yourself.
See ya tomorrow!
