Day 16: Identify a relationship that you want to strengthen and do a grand gesture to kick-start it.
The Blurb: The idea of a grand gesture is intoxicating. Everyone wants to be the recipient of one. Today I’m turning the tables and asking you to think about the people in your life and identify one relationship (it does NOT have to be a romantic relationship) that you would like to strengthen. Once you’ve figured out your target comes the fun stuff. A grand gesture involves putting yourself out there and exposing your true feelings. You offer something big in exchange for the attention/gratitude/focus of the other person.
Suggestions: If there’s a romantic relationship that could use a little boost, now is the time to do it. Reengage. Pretend you’re at the beginning of the relationship and you still have to get their attention. Surprise him/her at work. Do something you know they will appreciate. If you want to take it up another notch, figure out their Love Language and do a grand gesture in the way that speaks to them. You can take a quiz on the 5 Love Languages Website to see which love language your significant other speaks.
Maybe the relationship you want to strengthen is with a good friend, a father, a step-mom, a daughter or son, a co-woker. It doesn’t matter who it is, everyone loves to be the recipient of a thoughtful, meaningful gesture. You’ll be surprised at the difference a little attention can generate.
Keeping It Real: This can be a a little unnerving. You’re rocking the boat, taking a chance, and that’s scary. But in my opinion, it’s the best way to live your life. Why leave anything behind? Why not act on how you really feel? If people were just honest with one another- I mean really honest- the world would be such a different place. Yes, you risk that the other person won’t reciprocate. But even in a worst case scenario, at least you know. Knowing gives you power, the power to determine if the relationship has turned toxic the power to choose that you won’t let it affect you anymore, and the power to walk away to find a better path.
If you’ve been thinking about trying to mend a relationship, forgive a wrong or give someone another chance, today is the day. Be amazing. Be grand. Put it all out there. Give someone the opportunity to love your back with no strings attached. You can do this.
